An Interview with Darren Cranmer.

Who and from where are you?

I was born in England, raised and lived most of my life in Guernsey in the Channel Islands and now live near Lake Balaton in Hungary.

How you got into this?

Since I could crawl as a child I was always drawing, painting and making. Throughout school I was pursuing a creative line of activity, I entered the working world as a bespoke jeweller and designer. I decided to re-align myself back to a career in the visual arts by going to university in my mid-twenties. I worked as an Illustrator and graphic designer after completing a BA (Hons) degree at the Arts University Bournemouth in England. However after much contemplation I was drawn further still to the fulfillment of creating and expressing through creating art. Together with a wish for a more sustainable home and lifestyle we moved to a beautiful area near Lake Balaton where we grow and sell organic fruit and vegetables. I have only been painting in oils since I relocated to Hungary a couple of years ago, prior to that I mostly had used graphite and charcoal sometimes combined with acrylic and gouache. My long desire to use oils was finally enabled with the move to Hungary and the circumstance it provided and I very much have enjoyed using this medium and the worlds and effects I can create with it.

What is your driving force?

I am very much a lateral thinker, I absorb my environments and imagine others, I think 'around' things. I also interact with and process the world very visually. Colours and forms I cannot help but notice and which I want to experiment with in my own creations. There is a deep meditation state, sense of accomplishment, learning journey and joyful reward for me which has always been there in art. It is my method of internal and external discourse.

What kind of work you do and why?

Currently my work is divided into 2 areas; the first is my conceptual surreal figurative work inspired by various science and anthropology subjects, the second is ethereal landscape paintings of the Lake Balaton and the surrounding hills which have unique forms and morphing seascapes of the Channel Islands. I enjoy commenting on or addressing topics or just freely creating something visually stimulating and imaginative. Whether it be the effects of screen-based media or social-cultural environments on people or playfully forming an expressive landscape scene. For my conceptual works such as 'Being' and 'Light Veil' I combine areas of realism with abstract and symbolic forms that interact with the person portrayed. My landscapes and seascape also have focal points of realism or detail which blend and morph into sweeping and moving surroundings. This enables me to combine my love of figurative and detailed work with experimental and liberating methods of metaphor or atmosphere. I have a exhibition of my Balaton landscapes in July at Dörgecse, Hungary and I am in the process of organising exhibitions of my other works in Europe and the UK.
